Xbox Mode on Windows 11 PCs: What It Is and How to Get It

Xbox mode is a full screen, controller friendly way to launch games on Windows 11. Here is what Microsoft says it does, how to get it and what is still unclear.

Xbox mode is a console style way to use a Windows 11 PC for games. Microsoft announced it on 30 April 2026 and said the rollout would be gradual. This guide explains what the feature is, what it shows on screen, how to try to get it, and which details Microsoft has not given.

What Xbox mode is

Xbox Wire describes it as a controller optimized, full screen experience built for play, and says it was formerly called the full screen experience. It is built on Windows, so you keep the openness of a PC. Microsoft says it is meant for Windows 11 PCs, including laptops, desktops and tablets, and it also highlights handhelds.

What you see in it

According to Microsoft, Xbox mode gives you:

  • A controller optimized interface to browse and launch games.
  • A streamlined layout that puts your library and recently played games within easy reach and keeps background distractions to a minimum.
  • An aggregated library that includes the full games catalog from Xbox Game Pass and installed games from leading PC storefronts.

You can jump back and forth between Xbox mode and the normal Windows 11 desktop whenever you want, so nothing is taken away from the desktop.

How to get it

Microsoft says the rollout started on 30 April 2026 in select markets, and that availability would expand to more players over the next several weeks. It does not name the markets. The steps it gives are:

  1. Open Settings and go to Windows Update.
  2. Turn on the option Get the latest updates as soon as they are available.
  3. Install the update when it reaches your device.
  4. After that, you can open Xbox mode directly from your PC.

If you do not see it, it may not have reached your region or PC yet.

What Microsoft has not said

The Windows blog post and Xbox Wire do not list hardware requirements, they do not give a keyboard shortcut and they do not explain what changes in the background. Some websites describe shortcuts or an exact start in one country, but we could not confirm those details on Microsoft's own pages, so we leave them out.

Who it is for

This is our reading of what Microsoft describes, not a claim from the company. Xbox mode looks most useful if you play on a TV or sit away from the desk, because a controller can handle browsing, launching and switching games without the mouse. It could also help on a handheld or a small tablet, where the normal desktop is awkward. If you mainly play at a desk with a keyboard, you may not use it much, and since you can leave it at any time there is little to lose by trying it once it arrives.

The Windows blog also mentions that Automatic Super Resolution, or Auto SR, is in preview for Xbox Insiders on the ROG Xbox Ally X. Microsoft says that when the device is docked and connected to an external display, Auto SR aims for 1440p like detail with smooth frame rates, and that Insiders can choose in Game Bar when it applies to each game.

Quick checklist

  • Update Windows and turn on early updates.
  • Wait a few weeks if it is not available yet in your region.
  • Switch back to the desktop whenever you need it.
  • Treat unofficial shortcuts and dates with caution.
